Headquartered in North Carolina, Lowe’s Foods is a major grocery supermarket chain with over 100 stores operating in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Priding themselves on strong customer orientation and being homegrown by supporting local farms and businesses, Lowe’s Foods continues to grow throughout the Carolinas.
Tobias & West was brought in on this project to design the main grocery store, which stands at 46,000 square feet along with the specialty shops on either side, which range from 7,000 to 5,000 square feet. This design required special reinforced masonry shear walls to support the roof structures because of the high seismic zone of the store location in Myrtle Beach, SC. Since the main building features numerous openings within the roof system for skylights, it required a well thought-out design to ensure the structural integrity was maintained while preserving the architectural intent.
