Tobias & West was employed to provide the structural design of their new 2-story, medical office building. A steel-framed building supporting a bar joist second floor system and wood roof trusses was chosen to meet the building code requirements and also provide a cost effective design. The foundation system selected consisted of shallow, isolated column footings to support the individual columns. These were interconnected with reinforced concrete grade beams to help minimize localized settlement and “lateral spread” of the foundation during a seismic event.
